Primary School

Welcome to the Primary Program at Colegio Internacional de San Salvador!

Our Primary Program consists of grades 1 through 6. First grade students develop a strong foundation in reading English, building on the Spanish-reading skills they mastered in our Preschool program (Parvularia 5 and 6). Students study Social Studies and Language Arts in both Spanish and English, while Math and Science classes are taught in English only. Students who are not yet bilingual because they are transferring in from other schools are given the opportunity to work in a special pull-out program for select classes in order to gradually transition them into the regular programs.

Because our students study social studies from a U.S. perspective as well as a Salvadoran perspective, they are exposed early on to diverse cultural thinking. The student body itself is also quite diverse (approximately half of our students have a nationality other than Salvadoran). Our school community strongly emphasizes the importance of respecting others, regardless of the differences we may have.

All students take physical education classes (which includes swimming and dance), music, library, art, and computers. The academic program is demanding, but we also recognize the importance of family time, which is why homework is never assigned over weekends, over vacations, or when a child must take a trip with family.

Special attention is given to the physical safety and emotional care of each child, and each one is guided to grow in their social skills, organizational skills and personal responsibility. We recognize that each child learns in a different way, and strive to encourage each child in their learning journey in a way that is meaningful to them. Our vision is for our students to be leaders in the global community. Those seeds of leadership begin in the personal responsibility and critical thinking they develop at an early age. It is important for them to realize that life does not begin at some point in the future when they are grown, but even now, they have the power to contribute as a positive member of their community.

If you have any questions about our Primary Program feel free to e-mail me. We welcome you to visit our school, and look forward to the possibility of having your child form part of the CISS family!

Sincerely,

“It must be remembered that the purpose of education is not to fill the minds of students with facts. It is to teach them to think, if that is possible, and always to think for themselves.”
